1992-93: The 1992 season began with
turmoil for the
Canes. Miami was pre-season #1 but then Hurricane Hugo wiped out
much
of the local
Miami area and devasted the homes of many of the Hurricane's players and
coaches. Debating whether to continue with their season, Miami showed
what the heart of a champion is all about. After
opening the year with a 24-7 whipping of 23rd ranked Iowa in Iowa City,
Miami went on to go 11-0 through the regular season. Quarterback, Gino
Torretta became Miami's second Heisman Trophy recipient. Torretta
threw for 430 yards against Iowa and finished his collegiate career
with a 26-2 record. During
the season, Miami had a three week stretch of games which after they were
done, prompted ABC's Keith Jackson to say, "Aren't they special."
First, the
Canes survived the Desert Swarm defense with an 8-7 victory over Arizona.
Then
Miami won a war
with 3rd ranked Florida State and quarterback Charlie Ward, 19-16. In a
third consecutive week, Miami beat 7th ranked Penn State 17-14 in Happy
Valley. Later in the season, Miami held on to
beat Syracuse at the Carrier
Dome 16-10 as the Syracuse tight end, Chris Gedney, was tackled by Miami
at
the 3 yard line as time ran out. Miami's magical season ended abruptly
with a loss to Alabama in the
Sugar Bowl, but the heart of the Canes was never challenged for a moment.
The Cane's graduating class of 1992 went 44-4 in four years, won two
national championships and won three bowl games. It is widely considered
the greatest graduating class in college football history.
