Englishman Steve Wicks faces a daunting task as he steps into the shoes of Australian Ken Worden, who coached Selangor to two consecutive Malaysia Cup victories.
Unlike other teams, Selangor have had a headstart in their preparations for this year's M-League campaign. Even before the previous season ended, Selangor had already signed on Englishman Tony Cottee and South African Christopher Zwane Mandla. Both Cottee and Mandla come with impressive credentials and will certainly add more depth to Selangor's game. Their third foreigner is Australian Mehmet Durakovic, one of the finest defenders in M-League.
Manager Datuk Mohamed Aini Taib then shocked his rivals by snapping up national skipper Zainal Abidin Hassan as well. On top of that, Selangor already have a formidable squad with the likes of Internationals Azman Adnan and K Sanbagamaran, veterans Yap Kam Choon Annuar Abu Bakar, K Gunalan, Ismail Ibrahim and Mubin Mokhtar and talented youngsters Rusdi Suparman, Talib Sulaiman and Sharil Arsat. These players have been involved in top level football for the past three years.
Due to the wealth of talent available in the squad, several of last year's regulars like M Chandran, Asmawi Bakiri and Shamsul Amri Abu Bakar have been relegated to the Reserve League. But all three, thanks to the new FA of Malaysia (FAM) competition rules, can also feature in the Premier League. Mohamed Aini, who is also the FA of Selangor (FAS) president, has always rewarded his players with cash incentives. So, there is no reason for the players not to give their best. He had even declared that Selangor are eager to win all the silverware - the FA Cup, Malaysia Cup, League title and Charity Shield - at stake in the M-League.
Big ambitions for a mighty big club. But can the Red Giants do it?
