Malaysian kingpins Selangor are looking at a wider scope of conquest and will cherish taking part in the Asian club football championship this year.
The FA of Selangor's (FAS) president, DatukMohamed Aini Taib, said that they had informed the FA of Malaysia (FAM) about their intention to compete in the championship.
Selangor earned the right to represent Malaysia by winning the Malaysia Cup last year.
"We turned down the chance to play in the championship last year because of the tight schedule in the M-League," said Aini, who is also the team manager.
But Aini feels Selangor will be in a better position to participate in the championship this year.
"There is a break in June and also September. We have also requested the FAM to make some changes to our Premier League fixtures to enable us to compete in the championship," said Aini.
He feels that Selangor have the material to match the other teams in the championship.
Selangor have three foreign players of calibre - Englishman Tony Cottee, Australian Mehmet Durakovic and South African Christopher Mandla.
They also boast of a cast of the better local players in the country. Among them are internationals K. Sanbagamaran, Azman Adnan, Zainal Abidin Hassan and M. Chandran.
They also have those who played for the country at one time or another - Mubin Mokhtar, Shahril Arsat, Rusdi Suparman, K. Gunalan, Ismail Ibrahim and Yap Kam Choon.
Selangor also enjoy good support from their
fans and Aini feels that can play a big role in their campaign
in Asian-level competitions.
