AMHERST,
MASSACHUSETTS (June 24, 2001) - The United U19 girl's team saw their stellar
2001 spring soccer season end with a 3-2 loss to Worcester County in the state
semi-final at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
United
advanced to the state semi-finals by going 3-0-0 in round-robin play, beating
Bridgewater 5-1, Worcester County 3-0, and Gateway 3-0.
The girls claimed the top-seed in the tournament, heading into the
final day, where they faced Worcester County in the state semi-final.
“Of all the teams I’ve ever brought out to the state
tournament, this team had the best showing of any of them.”
Said Head Coach, Matt Cotter. “What
these 17 girls did over the first 2 days…
the level of soccer they played at…
was just unbelievable."
In the semi-final, United found themselves trailing for the
first time in the tournament, as Worcester County drew first blood. United battled back, however, claiming a 2-1 halftime lead on
goals by Central Catholic’s Casey Grange.
That would be all the scoring for United, however, as Worcester County
would answer with 2 second half goals and the 3-2 victory.
“We played a great tournament," continued Coach Cotter.
"I’m extremely proud of my girls.
Going in [the tournament], I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but
these girls really stepped it up. They
played phenomenally.”
The team qualified for the state tournament, representing the
Middlesex Soccer League, after finishing with a 6-0-0 regular season record.
United finished the season at 10-2-1.
