What is Pétanque?

Pétanque is both a leisure activity and a competitive sport. It was originally developed in Southern France, especially in Provence, and is now played throughout the world.
Many people know this game under the name "boules", especially as a beach activity, but the two games are slightly different.
One can play pétanque practically everywhere; however the most suitable surface is a level pitch of loam or of a mixture of sand and fine flint, such as may be found for instance in some parks or forest clearings, or on certain sports fields.

Pétanque is played with heavy steel balls weighing 650g to 800g (or also with balls of other metal of prescribed minimum hardness) with a diameter from 70.5 mm to 80 mm. These "boules" are inscribed with striations whose pattern serves to distinguish one person's boule from another's. Another necessary piece of equipment is a small wooden ball to serve as a jack: in french this is called the "cochonnet" which means piglet.
