Damon Hill started out in Formula 1 in 1992 in his first ever Grand Prix at Silverstone for the little known Brabham team. Hill had to live up to the reputation of his late father Graham, this would prove difficult with all the odds stacked against him. The following year Hill was appointed as Alain Prost's number two at the Williams team after the departure of Nigel Mansell. Hill struggled a bit at first but soon started to show the sort of pace of his more illustrious team mate Prost and Ayrton Senna. Hill's first win came in Hungary that year, followed by wins in Belgium and Italy, Hill was beginning to make his presence felt. In 1994 Ayrton Senna replaced Alain Prost at Williams but this new car wasn't as good as the previous one, Michael Schumacher starting the season with straight wins. Sadly Ayrton Senna lost his life at Imola, Damon Hill having to lead the team for the rest of the season being still relatively new in Formula 1. Michael Schumacher was in inspired form and opened up a huge lead in the world championship. Schumacher was later banned for two races after overtaking Hill on the parade lap in the British Grand Prix, he was also disqualified after winning the Belgian Gramd Prix, this gave Hill the opportunity to close the gap, which Hill did by winning in Italy and Portugal. Going into the last three races of the season there was only one point between them. |
