Kernels overpower Eagles

The Mitchell Kernels avenged a 46-35 loss to Aberdeen Central earlier in the year, by defeating the Golden Eagles soundly on Friday night in the Civic Arena, 47-38. Mitchell jumped out to a 7-0 lead and led 13-3 at the end of the first quarter. Aberdeen, playing its 3rd straight game without starting point guard Rebecca Goodman, managed a minor rally in the second period, scoring the first 7 points of the quarter to pull within 13-10, but that was as close as the Eagles would get the rest of the night. Mitchell outrebounded the Eagles 34-20, including 10 rebounds from Sarah Hoffman and 9 rebounds from Randi Morgan. The Eagles were led in scoring from senior Dawn Sillman with 18, but the Eagles struggled offensively all night, never quite able to mount a run against the Kernels. Mitchell effectively neutralized Aberdeen's motion offense by continually switching perimeter screens. The loss drops Central to 5-4 on the season and improves the Kernels to 6-3. Next action for the Eagles is Saturday night when the 2nd ranked Rapid City Central Cobblers visit the Arena.
