Eagles defense dominating in victory over Kernels
The Aberdeen Central Golden Eagles ended a long losing streak at the Kernel gym Saturday night by pushing the defense in a 46-35 win over perennial powerhouse Mitchell. It was a tight game throughout, with the Eagles holding leads of 2 points at the quarter break, 5 points at halftime, and 1 point going into the fourth quarter. The Eagles defense focused on stopping Mitchell's "big three" of Randi Morgan, Sarah Hoffman, and Steph McGregor, and did a good job in that regard, holding them to 24 points total. What really won the game for the Eagles, though, was the outstanding defensive pressure in the final quarter. The Golden Eagles dictated the entire game in the fourth quarter, holding the Kernels to just four points, making numerous steals, deflections, key rebounds, and forcing many tough shot attempts. The Eagles improve to 3-0 on the season and in the ESD, and find themselves in first place due to a loss by previously undefeated Yankton. The Eagles face a tough week ahead as they play at Yankton on Friday, then play undefeated Fargo Shanley at the Barnett Center on Saturday.
