Golden Eagles rally past Huron in overtime

Despite being outrebounded and outplayed for much of the game, Aberdeen Central dug deep down the stretch and made some key plays to hold off a scrappy Huron Tiger team 54-48 in overtime Friday night at the Civic Arena. Huron opened the game in a full court press that caught the Eagles off guard and took a 15-11 first quarter lead. In the second period the Eagles used full court pressure of their own to run to a three point halftime lead 24-21. In the third quarter, the Tigers opened up with 8 straight points, most on offensive rebounds and putbacks, and led 36-30 going into the fourth quarter. However, the Golden Eagles made a huge gut check and played a half court trap the entire fourth quarter, rattling the Tigers into turnovers down the stretch, and got big 3 pointers in the closing minutes by senior Dawn Sillman and freshman Amber Cantalope to tie the game at 45-45 with just over a minute to play. Huron scored on a basket by Sarita DeBoer to take a 47-45 lead, but two freethrows by Katie Norman with 53 seconds left knotted the game. After exchanging turnovers, the Tigers had the ball with 4 seconds left under their own basket. Since the Eagles had not yet put Huron in the bonus, they were able to foul on the inbounds play, and on the second inbounds attempt by Huron, their was not enough time to get up a good chance and the game went into overtime. In the extra frame the experience of Aberdeen Central took over as the Eagles outscored the Tigers 7-1, all on freethrow attempts. With the win the Eagles improve to 11-4 on the season and with 3 games remaining can still win the ESD by winning all three games. Next action for the Eagles in next Friday night when they travel to Brookings to take on the Bobcats, then host Pierre the following night in the Arena.
