The Fall 1997 Curriculum Update newsletter of the Asociation For Supervision and Curiculum Devlopment devoted its entire issue to a theme which has particular roots in American education, namely the connection between curriculum and the real world.

The particular article which was presented to the Historical Trends class for special focus featured the curriculum of the Central High School Magnet Career Academy located in the business center of downtown Louisville, Kentucky. Previously a comprehensive high school, Central now offers 10 specialized career-oriented curriculula (e.g., business, allied health, government).

What generated the most class discussion was not the benefits that might derive from the integral relationship between education and work being played out at Central and 14 other high schools in Jefferson County; rather, what students debated was the practice of mandating such experiences for high schoolers and the wisdom with which students as young as fourteen years of age were making temporary carer decisions.

If you choose, contribute to the discussion. Click the "join in" link to access the message board where you may offer your comments or pose a question on the work-school link issue.
