Unit 3 Overview

I. Theme: Social Diversity Past and Present

II. Objectives:

A. Students will evaluate the degree to which liberal ideology was consistent with democratic ideals espoused by famous educators of the Progressive era, such as John Dewey.

B. Students will distinguish among different strands of Progressivism

C. Students will evaluate the degree to which all populations of students were equally well served by the four progressive educational aims of social stability, employable skills, equal educational opportunity, and meritocracy.

D. Students will assess the extent to which arguments for vocational education in public schools are supportable versus a liberal education or differentiated-curriculum approach.

 

III. Content:

Chapters 4 and 11
Film: "Education in America: Twentieth Century Developments"
Articles: " Immigration Aspirations"; "Development of Kindergarten"

IV. Special Features:

A. Book Review due on April 16 (day classes), April 26 (evening class). Book sharing can occur anytime after due dates.

B. Assignments will be handled online from April 19-April 26

C. Test dates: April 30 (Monday-Wednesday-Friday classes); May 10 (Evening class)
