Existentialism In American Education

Aims

· To explore the way that human beings have used reason to rationalize absurd events (war, genocide, famine and poverty in times of plenty, etc…)

· To foster an understanding of anxiety and frustration which constitute the natural tension in existence.

· To be tuned to "possibility," the power of individual thought and inquiry.

Methods

· Allow students to make choices in shaping their education

· Develop an educational environment which enables the child to conrol his/her own education

· Be serious about subject matter, but always aware that no one can make another "learn."

Curriculum

· Heavy dose of humanities courses (literature, philosophy, music, art--- courses promoting reflection)

· "Landscape" (Being- in- the- world) versus "Geography" (Structuring the landscape subjectively, not objectively)

· Curriculum for the youngest students is heavily inputted by as many diverse perspectives as possible.

Critique

· Rejection of any order, structure, discipline, and habits of study

· Rejection of accountability to others

· Over-emphasis on individual perspective to the exclusion of valid, objective perspective
