The January 1998 Education Update published by the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development focuses on Parental Involvement issues in the public school. At the conclusion of the article, the following tips are offered for creating a meaningful parent involvement program:

• Make the school inviting
• Strategize ways to involve parents in schools. Many don't know how to become involved or feel intimidated because they haven't been in school since they were students.
• Make parents equal parents with educators by allowing them a voice in school decisions.
• Avoid educational jargon
• Schedule meetings at convenient times for parents.
• Show respect for parents' perspectives.
• Cultivate an open and civil atmosphere in which the principal is the facilitator.
• Keep parents well informed and encourage two-way communication.
• Celebrate parental participation.

I submit to you that these ideas are very vague. For extra credit, you may choose any three and offer one or two specific strategies for making the schools "inviting."
