** Attach written response to problem #2 to the chapter 4 worksheet
The second problem involves the exploring of a term which definition is crucial for understanding Progressive Education. Unfortunately, we take the term for granted or at least believe we understand it. The term? DEMOCRACY
Democracy is NOT merely the present day American political or economic system. Democracy is much older than that! To the Greeks, deocracy meant being a free man as opposed to a slave; to Jefferson it meant having the right to participate in discusions about the nation's future. Regretfully, the "right" had too much to do with property ownership, gender, and skin color.
Solve the following mystery (I say "mystery" because the answers to these questions are not exactly in the book but can be in large measure inferred from a careful reading of and thinking about chapter 4.)What does democracy mean by the time we get to John Dewey? How does Dewey link democracy and education? Is democracy part of schooling today? Why/Why not/how?
Take your best shot! Be sure I know what you mean by DEMOCRACY.
