The Days of Rest and Relaxation

Many people wonder what they will do when they get out of college.  Some people make plans for what they will do after college.  Some do not.  A problem occurs when the people with plans have their plans dashed.  Me, I fall somewhere in between the two categories.

I had a plan.  The plan was for me to graduate from Arkansas Tech University with honors and then go to Medical School.  This did not work out immediately.  I was not accepted into medical school the first time I applied (in the process of reapplying).  A large number of people were asking me, "Lex, what are you going to do know?"  A simple answer to that question is work.  During my last weeks of college, I worked on acquiring a job in the Clarksville area that paid decently and had the hours to where I could also continue my work on the family farm.  The job that I found and worked at was Baldor Motors and Gears Plant in Clarksville.  I was hired through a Temporary Employment Service (Staffmark) for the first shift.  This worked out wonderfully for me.  I was able to work from about 7 in the morning to about 3 in the evening and then go work in the hay field.

Most people would say that was not an ideal situation.  I would disagree.  By working in the hay field, I was able to take some stress off of my father.  He did not need it and I could handle it.  We were able to get most of our hay up without too much of it being rained on.  Near the end of the hay season, I was contacted by Dr. David Grant of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.  He had a good working relationship with me and wanted to know if I might be interested in taking a position in his research lab until I was accepted into medical school.

I must say that I had to think about this proposition.  It was not that I didn't like the idea of working in the research field again.  The difficulty dealt with finances.  I was being allowed to live at home in Clarksville without rent or food expenses and was being paid a decent amount of money per week.  The job in Little Rock would require me to move to Little Rock, pay for my own food, and probably acquire some items that I would need for living there.  Pay would definitely come into my decision.  Dr. Grant understood my concern and was able to take the problem away.  He was able to pay me a (more than fair) salary that would allow me to make the move and still be in decent standing.

I have been accepted into the Class of 2005 at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Medicine.  Classes began a few weeks ago so updates to the web site will be even further apart than usual.  Please continue to check the site for updates though.
