Thank you for visiting this page. I hope the reason that you visited was to either learn about the Fraternity of which I am an Alumni or to learn about Fraternity's in general.
I am a loud supporter of the Fraternity experience and what it can do for a young male. A properly functioning Fraternity in this day and age can provide a young man with the same excitement and college pride that men of old remember without all of the alcohol. I am proud to say that the Fraternity of which I am a part (the Fraternity of Alpha Kappa Lambda) has moved for all of its chapters and colonies to be alcohol and substance free. A Fraternity can provide a young man with a great opportunity to "network". By this, I mean that the member/pledge will have a great opportunity to visit other chapters/colonies at other Universities and colleges and establish friendships that he would have missed out on if he had not joined. These friendships, if properly based in the dream of the Fraternity, will last until death and can provide a person with a good way of finding out information and meeting people. I can speak from personal experience in regards to this. I can honestly say that without the fraternity experience, I would not have developed several of the friendships that I now hold dear.
I have briefly mentioned the founding of the colony of which I was a part of. I will not tire you with a great deal of detail unless emailed and asked. I am proud of what we did. On a campus that has not had an established fraternity join in twenty years, we were able to establish a colony that has the potential to grow and become one of the largest fraternities on campus. As is common on most small colleges, the weekend campus life was the greatest challenge experienced by us at the start and continues to be. A small college campus on average loses over half of its student body on the weekend to trips home or work. This makes it hard for any small university to develop a good campus life.
The fraternity life at ATU is very different from that of the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville or the University of Central Arkansas. Both schools have 3 to 2 times the number of students in attendance and thus a higher likelihood of keeping an active campus life on the weekend. A more active campus life on the weekend as well as during the week make for more active fraternities in school activities. Many of the fraternities at ATU still have activities on weekend or during the week. I will speak from personal experience about some of these. It is my understanding that most of these activities are closed to friends and non-fraternity members. This is perceived as stand-offish and plain cocky by many non-fraternity students. Also, some of these activities should be reevaluated for need and purpose by the fraternities involved. I will not continue a discussion into that area since it might lead to remarks that may be perceived as derogatory and which are not appropriate and could be untrue.
Many of the "young" members of the Arkansas Gamma Colony of the Fraternity of Alpha Kappa Lambda at Tech are becoming the members that we envisioned them to be. I will be frank. Some of them have developed into even better members then we could have hoped for. They have stepped up to tasks that have been presented to them by the leadership and worked hard and in most cases accomplished their goals.
I am pleased with how the group is developing a new leadership core now that most of the founders have graduated or moved away. The current leadership is delving into new ground as a more established organization and must decide what to do. The colony at Arkansas Tech University has its own web page that is quite detailed but slightly out of date. A new web master was elected/ appointed and we hope that he will be able to get the page updated soon. Follow the Arkansas Gamma Colony link below to go to their web site or click on the NHQ link to go to the National Headquarters of the Fraternity of Alpha Kappa Lambda's web site. Members may use the open web meeting link below to begin a meeting or click the join meeting to join an ongoing meeting with members.
