The Environment for Research
Almost every tour group that comes to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) is introduced to the Biomedical Research Center on the UAMS campus. It is one of their many pride and joys. I can see why. It is an excellent facility.
Most research facilities that I have been in are dark, quiet, and the rooms are
made such that you can't look outside. Translation. The rooms are
designed to make you feel like you are in a cave like alchemists of the
past. This is not the case here. As
you can see,
the Biomedical building is designed such that all the research rooms can have
access to light from outside. This is done by having a skylight in the
ceiling and the research rooms equipped with windows.
Also, the labs, through various grants, are much better equipped than I am
used to. I am not used to a great deal when it comes
to equipment. Arkansas Tech was not blessed with a lot of money for the
Chemistry department and most of the equipment was getting very old (older than
I was). The Biomedical
building is equipped with numerous conveniences that I am not used. They
have cold rooms where culture work can be done. They have good
equipment. They also have the ability to contact the NCTR (National Center
for Toxicological Research at Jefferson City, AR) or the UALR campus for assistance if the equipment can
not be found on campus here.
I am used to the type of professors, associate professors, and assistant professors that are at UAMS. Most of the teachers and researchers that I have meet are very nice and open. They normally have the doors to their offices open and encourage you to come by and talk to them about results from an experiment or if you have questions. The professors at Tech were that way as well so I don't know if I could handle a professor that did not encourage that type of association. Thankfully, from everything I have seen in the College of Medicine here, I will not experience that if I go to medical school at UAMS.
