Abigail's picture
Abigail Delgado, PLUS Counselor
University of California, San Diego
B.A. Ethnic Studies and Literatures of the World

Abigail accomplished one of her biggest goals the day she graduated from UCSD. As a first generation college student, from South Los Angeles, college was not a path that she was expected to take. It was the motivation of her parents and high school counselor that lead her to pursue her goal. Attending a University with minimal diversity was difficult to adjust to so she sought out mentors and peers that she could relate to and helped her form a familia.

As an undergraduate Abigail was actively involved in student organizations that fought for social justice and access to educational resources for under-served communities. Her commitment to working with educationally and economically disadvantaged communities lead her to work as a Peer Counselor for UCSD Summer Bridge and Academic Transition Program as well as the Student Support Services Program. After graduation she worked for UC Riverside’s Early Academic Outreach Program motivating youth in the San Gabriel Valley area to see college as an attainable goal. Currently, she volunteers her time to organizations whose purpose is to motivate students to pursue higher education and become involved in their communities.

Abigail enjoys working to make students experience at UCLA favorable and encourages all students to take advantage of the resources available. Abigail believes strongly that everyone should remember the communities they come from and make a commitment to help improve their communities. Make UCLA your new home and get involved. In Lak Ech!

Angela's picture
Angela Robles, PLUS Counselor
M.A. African American Studies
M.A. Education
University of California, Los Angeles
B.A. English/Political Science
Spelman College

Angela Robles grew up in the small college town of Amherst, Massachusetts. For most of her life she lived in isolation as one of the few minorities in her classroom. She had to cope with this sense of cultural alienation through her connection with her family. After graduating from high school she decided to attend a historically black women’s college in Atlanta called Spelman. During her time there she immersed herself not only into the college experience, but also into the cultural experience. She had longed for this opportunity to grow and learn from other African Americans and this was the perfect time to do so.

From attending church services to writing her senior thesis on Angela Davis, she found her place in a world that had previously been unknown to her. Although she attended school at a historically black college, she wanted to further her historical and cultural knowledge of the African American community. Angela then attended UCLA where she received two Masters degrees in African American Studies and Education.

While in the Masters programs she met her husband Pablo who is originally from Guatemala. After marrying Pablo she began to learn about and became a part of the Latino community. Her familiarity with both her own identity as an African American and her Latino family has made her aware of cultural, linguistic and social issues that are faced by both groups.

Her greatest accomplishment is having her son Fernando who was born in May of 2000. She is very excited about her new position in AAP as a PLUS Counselor. She is looking forward to meeting every one of you in the near future and she wishes you all a wonderful year filled with many achievements and successful endeavors.

Todd's picture
Todd J. Bradley, PLUS Counselor
B.A. Psychology
University of California, Los Angeles

Todd Bradley is a native of Los Angeles, California. His mother, Alma Bradley, raised him in a single parent household in south central Los Angeles. She gave him the skills necessary to succeed in life…morals, integrity, respect, strength, and knowledge. With her love and support, he was able to achieve his dream of graduating from UCLA. He knows that without his mother, he would not have become the man and counselor he is today.

Todd is the first in his family to graduate from college but his academic career was not a smooth one. He entered UCLA in 1984 as a pre-engineering major. After five years of confusion and changing majors twice, he decided to postpone his education so he could work full-time to support his family. Ten years later, while working at the Academic Advancement Program, he returned to UCLA part-time. After 16 years of obstacles, Todd proudly received his B.A. in Psychology. Remember, "dreams may seem faint but there will never die within the heart. Open your heart and your dreams will come true."

He is a loving brother to two siblings and an active member of his church. He is also a big brother to six foster care boys. The boys are the center of his heart and soul…they have given him a newfound passion for life. He treats everyone the way he wants to be treated…with respect and love. His goal is to reach at least one young person and make a difference/change in their life ("if I can reach just one person, I have done my job").

Todd keeps GOD first and through the lord, no door shall be closed for long. He believes that no problem is too small for his attention. Together, all members of PLUS shall accomplish their goal to be a UCLA graduate! He is committed to all the students within PLUS and AAP. His door will always be open.

Antonio Moore

I entered UCLA in the summer of 97 as a young bright High School student with the help and guidance of AAP and the FSP program my transition to UCLA was that much easier than it would have been. UCLA was and continues to be a very hard enviornment for me to adjust to as an individual. While I feel I have grown over the past three years, in many ways I feel I have stayed the same and still exist as that open eyed freshman I was day one of FSP. Being a first generation student the transition and adjustment to UCLA was very hard for me and through time and by working hard I have made things dealable. Often times I enter class and feel isolated and separated being one of few African American men on campus. Yet within time I have learned how to cope with this UCLA enviornement. My advice is don’t change adjust and learn from UCLA.

I am originally from Guatemala, Central America, but have lived in Long Beach since the age of 4. I have an older sister who is also a counselor for AAP. Martha Rivas

Hello everyone! My name is Martha Rivas. This is my second year serving as a PLUS Peer Counselor but before I get into that, let me tell you a little about myself. I was born in Zamora, Michoacan , Mexico. My family and I migrated to Southern California when I was two years old. Due to my father’s job we moved around quite a bit but have been residing in Indio, California for over fifteen years. I am the middle child; I have an older sister who attends Cal State Northridge and a younger brother who just graduated from Indio High School, my alma mater. I am the first and only family member to attend a University.

I am now a fourth year student, majoring in Comparative Literature with a triple minor in Education, Public Policies and ChicanA/o Studies. I am passionately interested in Education and currently researching Graduate programs in Education. I hope to graduate next year 2002 and continue my education in pursuit of my teaching credentials and Masters in Education. I plan to teach for a few years at the secondary level before I pursue my Administrative credentials to then become as a High School Principal…. Eventually I plan to obtain my Ed.D. in Administrative, Policy, and Social Planning from Harvard sometime before becoming a Superintendent.

Being an education advocate, I have participated in many student leadership programs, retention centers and tutoring programs. I have been an active Inland Empire Future Leader (since ’94) serving as a peer counselor and facilitator at an intense week-long summer Latino Leadership program where students learn about their culture and gain an understanding of balancing the rigours of academics and extracurricular activities to be “well-rounded” to pursue a higher education. In regards to UCLA’s programs, I have volunteered for Uni-Camp, aka Tinkle. I have also participated with UCLA’s AmeriCorp’s America Reads program as a literacy tutor in East Los Angeles and South Central Los Angeles. In conjunction to the America Reads program I also served as an undergraduate Teaching Assitant for UCLA Education courses.

As a first-generation, low-income, PLUS student and peer counselor, I have experienced and understand many of the obstacles our students face. Thus, I have had the privilege of sharing my experiences and coping with issues, whether social or academic, students need. Though I am assigned a PLUS student caseload, my advice, knowledge and questions welcome everyone in the AAP/PLUS family. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions (social, academic, Graduate School, University requirements, Study Abroad…ANYTHING) I am here to assist the transition to UCLA as ‘easy’ as possible. It may seem and feel as a challenge BUT anything and everything can be achieved. Si Se Puede!

Lidia Hernandez

Hello PLUS students, I am one of the several PLUS peer counselors. This year I have the pleasure of working with Abigail Delgado and my caseload will consist of PLUS students with last names between N-R. I am a third year student double majoring in Sociology and Communication Studies as well as minoring in Education. Currently, I am also a Resident Assistant in Rieber Hall where I outreach to first and second year students. I will also serve as a tutor this quarter at a nearby Los Angeles elementary school, and anticipate on having a wonderful time.

This is my second year of counseling for the PLUS program and really enjoy my job and what I have to offer. Last year I was involved a great deal with the AAP/PLUS services including counseling, tutorial, workshops, student tours, programming and the annual Scholars Day Conference. I look forward to participating and taking advantage of these services once again.

Like you may have read earlier, I do have a sister who is also serving as a PLUS peer counselor this year. We are both eager to be working together and plan on making this PLUS year a success! I look forward for the opportunity of meeting each and every one of you. Have a wonderful year!

Veronica Jimenez

Hola everyone! My name is Veronica R. Jimenez, and I am the Continuing PLUS Peer Counselor. I am a fourth year student majoring in Psychology and minoring in French, and I am currently in the process of applying to grad school. I am originally from the West LA area, but I love going to my parent's home town in Mexico -- a little pueblito known as Moyahua Zacatecas.

On campus I am involved with the Career Based Outreach Program (C.B.O.P.) helping at-risk inner city high school students become comptetively elligble to attend four year institutions like UCLA. I am also working on two research projects here on campus -- a Child Anxiety Study, and a Cognitive-Behavioral treatment study with hyperactive preschoolers.

I find my job as a Peer Counselor and my involvement with C.B.O.P. to be a very rewarding experience. It's nice to know that other people look up to you not only as a Peer Counselor or mentor, but as a friend who is always there to listen to them. As a first generation college student coming from a very small high school, I know how difficult it may be to find our "niche" in a big university. Its nice to know that there is someone around who can listen to our problems and share our joy whenever possible. It's a nice feeling when others believe in you, and it's even better when you believe in yourself; that is why I believe in everyone's capacity to excell if we all give it a little "ganas" (desire + effort + hardwork).

This will be my second year as the Continuing PLUS Peer Counselor, and I feel very fortunate to be a part of the PLUS team, not only as a Peer Counselor but as a student as well. I look forward to having the oppurtunity to meet with each and every one of you! I wish you all the best of luck in everything! Feel free to e-mail me at moyahua@ucla.edu anytime. Take care!
