UPINGTONIA

REPUBLIC OF UPINGTONIA

During the co-called "Thirst Land Migration" (Dorsland Trek) of 1874 - 1880, some Boers from Transvaal migrated to Southern Angola. After conflicts with the Portuguese authorities, some returned to Transvaal, while others migrated to the South. Here they founded in 1885 the Republic of Upingtonia, so-called in honor of Thomas Upington, the premier of the Cape Colony whose help they expected to obtain in this way. In order to escape conquest by the Herero, the Republic accepted German protection soon afterwards, becoming part of German South West Africa. __________________________________________________________________________________

Most Boers then returned to Transvaal, but some of them went again to Angola. New problems with the Portuguese authorities led them to remigrate to South West Africa in 1928 and 1957.
