BRITISH CAPE COLONY

The Netherlands Colony of the Cape - founded in 1652 - was occupied by the British in 1806 and formally ceded to them by the Treaty of Paris in 1814. It was organized as a Crown Colony, which was granted selfgovernment in 1872.
