The ancient town of Trieste was a possession of the Bishopric of the same name until
1295 when it became a Free Imperial City. To defend itself against Venetian attacks
it voluntarily accepted Habsburg overlordship in 1382, keeping however some of its
selfgovernment until 1815. The city was under French rule from 1806 to 1813.
In 1848 Trieste became a separate Kronland of the Austrian Monarchy and in 1861 it
was once agian granted some selfgovernment. (1)
(1) In 1791 Trieste was granted the status of a Free Port and as a consequence
evolved from a fishing and salt collecting village to a major trading
place in the Adriatice Sea, especially after the opening of the Suez Canal
(1869) and the extension of the Austrian railways to the southern parts of
the realm.
This status was maintained after the Italian occupation of 1918.
