New Mexico - founded in 1598 as a province of the Spanish Vice Royalty of New Spain
- became part of Mexico in 1822.
It was occupied by U.S. forces in 1846 and formally ceded by Mexico in 1848 by the
Treaty of Guadelupe-Hidalgo.
After a brief period of military rule it was organized as an U.S. Territory in 1850.

(1) The original territory was enlarged in 1853 following the readjustment of
its southern frontier as a result of the so-called Gadsen purchase.
New Mexico reached its present day frontiers in 1863 after some northern
parts had been transferred to Colorado and its western part had become
the new Territory of Arizona.
(See here for more on Arizona and the Confederate intervention in the region
1861 - 1862).
