CONFEDERATE TERRITORY OF ARIZONA

"Arizona" was the informal name given to the former Mexican territories annexed to the US Territory of New Mexico as a result of the Gadsen purchase of 1854. Feeling neglected by the territorial authorities in Santa Fé the inhabitants of the region started agitating for the creation of a separate territory of Arizona and in 1861 - taking advantage of the withdrawal of most federal troops - a Convention assembled at Tucson [mar 16, Chairm. : Marck Aldrich 1801 - 1873)] proclaimed the adhesion of the Territory of Arizona to the Confederate States. Soon afterwards it was occupied by a Confederate militia (th" Tewas Mounted Rifles") and its leader formally proclaimed the inclusion of Arizona into the Confederacy (aug 01 , confirmed by the government on feb 14 1862). __________________________________________________________________________________
