MARGRAVIATE OF MORAVIA

In 1029 Moravia - which had been an independent Kingdom or Duchy from ca 830 to 906 and had afterwards been subject to Hungary - became part of Bohemia. In 1182 it again became a separate unit, styled the Markgraviate of Moravia. It continued however to be linked to Bohemia in a personal union for most of the time, the Bohemian rulers also assuming the title of Margrave of Moravia 1197 - 1224, 1239 - 1246, 1252 - 1349 and finally 1414 - 1918. In 1526, when the Habsburgs became Kings of Bohemia, Moravia also became one of their possessions. In 1849 it became a separate Kronland of the Monarchy, enjoying a certain degree of selfgovernment from 1861 onwards. ____________________________________________________________________________
