DEPENDENCIES OF JAMAICA

Dependencies of Jamaica included : - The Cayman Islands since 1863 - The Turks and Caicos Islands since 1874 __________________________________________________________________________________

DEPENDENCY OF THE CAYMAN ISLANDS

Like Jamaica itself, the Cayman Islands were transferred from Spanish to English rule in 1670. Until the early 18th century the islands actually were a pirate stronghold and it was only ca 1734 that the first permanent settlements could be established. The islands were selfgoverning under the supervision of Jamaica until 1863 when they formally became a direct dependency of Jamaica. __________________________________________________________________________________

DEPENDENCY OF THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS

The Turks islands were settled in 1678 by English salt-collectors from Bermuda. The Caicos, which for some time had been a major pirate stronghold, were settled by British Loyalists after 1783. Both groups were annexed by Great Britain in 1799, becoming part of the Colony of the Bahamas until 1848 when they were organized as a separate colony. This situation lasted until 1874 when they became dependencies of Jamaica. __________________________________________________________________________________

ANGLICAN CHURCH IN JAMAICA

The Anglican religion was introduced on Jamaica in 1661 after the English conquest. The island was subject to the diocese of London until 1824 when a separate diocese of Jamaica - which became part of the selfgoverning province of the West Indies in 1883 - was established. (1) (1) At first the diocese also included the Bahamas and British Honduras. But later new dioceses were detached from its jurisdiction : - 1861 : the Bahamas (with the Turks and Caicos Islands) - 1891 : British Honduras __________________________________________________________________________________
