BRITISH DEPENDENCY OF GUYANA
The Dutch possessions of Essequibo-Demerara and Berbice on the coast of Guyana were
conquered by the British in 1803 and formally ceded to them by the Treaty of Paris
in 1814. (1)
Originally governed separately, they were united into the Crown Colony of British
Guyana in 1831.
(1) Berbice had already been occupied for a first time in 1781 - 1782, while
Demerara was also occupied from 1796 to 1802.

ANGLICAN CHURCH IN BRITISH GUYANA
The Anglican religion was introduced in Guyana during the first British occupation
of the area in 1781. Guyana was subject to the diocese of London until 1824 when it
becam part of the new diocese of Barbados.
In 1842 it became a separate diocese, that in 1883 became part of the selfgoverning
province of the West Indies.
