ISTRIA

MARGRAVIATE OF ISTRIA

The Margraviate of Istria was founded in the 11th century. Part of it already felt to the Habsburg in 1374, while the rest was annexed by Venice in 1420. In 1797 the Venetian part also became subject to Habsburg rule and - except for a period of French rule (1809 - 1813) - it remained so unil 1918. In 1849 Istria became a separate Kronland of the Austrian Monarchy, enjoying some selfgovernment since 1861. __________________________________________________________________________________
