SPANISH GUAM

During the Spanish period (1668 - 1899) Guam wasn't a separate dependency, but only the major administrative, economic and religious center of the dependency of the Mariana Islands (to be added). __________________________________________________________________________________

SPANISH ADMINISTRATORS

Governors of the Mariana Islands Gobernadores de las Islas Marianas (1) (subordinated to the Spanish Governors General of the Philippines - not all ranks could be retraced) 1843 - 1848 Gregorio Santa Maria 1... - 1848 1848 Félix Calvo* 1848 - 1855 Pablo Pérez 1855 - 1866 Felipe Maria de la Corte 1866 - 1871 Francisco Moscoso y Lara 1871 - 1873 Luis de Ybánez y García 1873 - 1875 Eduardo Beaumont y Calafat 1875 - 1880 Manuel Bravo y Barrera 1880 - 1884 Francisco Brochero y Parreno 1884 Enrique Solano 1884 Angel de Pazos Vela-Hidalgo 1... - 1884 1884 Antonio Borreda* 1884 - 1885 Francisco Olive y García 1885 - 1890 Enrique Solano (2x) 1890 - 1891 Gen. Juan Marina, surrendered to the US troops. (1) In view of this style it's perhaps not fully correct to lists the governors on this page. But as Guam was the only Mariana island where their authority was firmly established it seems logic to do so.

US TERRITORY OF GUAM

In 1898 - during the Spanish-American War - the US Navy captured Guam, which was formally ceded by Spain to the US by the Treaty of Paris (1898) and organized as an unincorporated US Territory, subordinated to the Navy Department in 1899.(1) (1) The US showed no interest for the other Mariana islands, which Spain later sold to Germany. __________________________________________________________________________________
