GÖRZ UND GRADISKA

PRINCELY COUNTY OF GÖRZ UND GRADISCA

The County of Görz (Ital.: Gorizia) was founded in the 11th century. It was united to the Habsburg possessions in 1500. Gradisca was a possession of Venice until 1511 when it became one of the Habsburg domains. It remained so until 1918 except for the period 1647 - 1717 when it was ruled by the House of Engelberg, the period 1809 - 1813 when ruled by the French and except for a brief Italian occupation in 1916 - 1917. In 1848 Görz and Gradisca were united into a Kronland of the Austrian Monarchy, enjoying some selfgovernment since 1861. __________________________________________________________________________________
