From 1857 onwards Copenhagen was headed by 4 Mayors. Until 1938 the meetings of the council were chaired by the state representative, the Head President. In 1938 he lost his executive role, being replaced in this by a Head Mayor. DANISH EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH (FOLKEKIRKEN)

In 1536 Lutheranism replaced Catholicism as major, sole legal religion in Denmark. In 1849 freedom of religion was proclaimed, but the Evangelical Lutheran Church remained Denmark's national Church. ____________________________________________________________________________

DANISH OVERSEA DEPENDENCIES


Danish Oversea Dependencies in the period 1871 - 1945 included : The Faroer since 1380/1814 (1) Greenland since 1380/1721/1814 Iceland from 1380/1814 to 1918 The Virgin Islands from 1672 to 1917 (1) The Faroer, Greenland and Iceland were originally Norwegian possessions. After the union between Denmark and Norway in 1380, their administration was however gradually taken over by Denmark. In 1814, by the Treaty of Kiel, they formally became Danish dependencies. The modern colonization of Greenland only started in 1721.
