DANISH COUNTY OF THE FAROER

The Faroer were colonized by Norse migrants ca 825. Since the 13th century they were considered as a separate land ("biland") of the Norwegian crown, not as a part of Norway itself. They nevertheless became part of the Danish - Norwegian Union in 1380 and in 1536 Denmark toke over the government of the islands, which however only became formally subject to the Danish crown in 1814, by the Treaty of Kiel. Two years later the last remnants of their selfgovernment were abolished and they became an "amt" (county) of Denmark. During the German occupation of Denmark in 1940 - 1945, the Faroer were occupied by British troops, in order to prevent a German takeover.
