Roman Catholicism was introduced in Sweden in the 11th century and a hierarchy was
immediately set up.
After the introduction of Lutheranism in 1523, Catholicism was forbidden and for
nearly three centuries the only Catholics in the country were foreign residents
which were under the care of the chaplain of the French embassy.
Although Sweden became an Apostolic Prefecture in 1781 and an Apostolic Vicariate
two years later, it was only after 1860 that a new indigenous Catholic community
emerged.
