Although Rwanda was formally included in the Apostolic Vicariate of Victoria
Nyanza (since 1883) and then in the Apostolic Vicariate of Southern Victoria
Nyanza (since 1894) Catholicism was only really introduced in the country in
1900 when its Umwami allowed the missionaries to erect a first church in the
vicinity of the capital.
In 1912 Rwanda and neighbouring Urundi were united in the Apostolic Vicariate
of Kivu, that lasted until 1922 when each territory became a Vicariate of its
own.
