Catholicism was introduced in Martinique in 1635, when the island was
settled by the French.
It was first organised as an Apostolic Prefecture, becoming a Diocese in
1850. This was first a suffragan to the French Archdiocese of Bordeaux but
in 1905 it became exempt.
