Although there had already been some attempts to do so since the 17th century
it was only in 1895 that Roman Catholicism was introduced in the Ivory Coast
The territory, until then formally part of the Apostolic Prefecture of the
Gold Coast, now became an Apostolic Prefecture of its own.
In 1911 it became an Apostolic Vicariate, which, in 1940, was renamed Abidjan
