THE CZECH LANDS

Roman Catholicism was introduced in the Czech lands in the 9th century and a regular hierarchy was set up soon afterwards. In 1945 it included the Archdioceses of Olomouc and Praha. ____________________________________________________________________________

OLOMOUC

The Diocese of Olomouc (Germ.: Olmütz) was erected in 1063. It became an Archdiocese in 1777. PRAHA

The Diocese of Praha was erected in 973. It became an Archdiocese in 1344. Its jurisdiction extended over Bohemia. SLOVAKIA

Catholicism was intoduced in Slovakia in the 9th century. As Slovakia however soon afterwards became part of Hungary the dioceses that were erected in the course of the following centuries, were dependent of the Hungarian Archdioceses until 1937 when they became exempt. In 1945 the Slovak Catholic hierarchy incorporated : - the exempt dioceses of Banská Bystrica, Košice, Nitra, Prešov (Ruthenian Rite), Rožnava and Spišs - the Apostolic Administrations of the Parishes of Satu Mare in Slovakia and of Trnava ____________________________________________________________________________

The Diocese of Banská Bystrica (Hung.: Besztercze-Bánya/Germ.: Neusohl) was erected in 1776. It was a suffragan of the Hungarian Archdiocese of Estergom until 1937. In 1939 the parts of the Romanian Diocese of Satu Mare which were within the frontiers of the new Slovak state were detached to form a separate Apostolic Administration. Like the Rusyn of Subcarpathia, the Slovaks of the Ruthenian Rite united with Rome in 1646. SUBCARPATHIA

MUKACEVO

The Rusyn of Subcarpathia were converted to the Orthodox Christian Church in the 9th century. In 1646 they united with the Roman Catholic Church, keeping however their own "Ruthenian" Rite. In 1771 the existence of the separate Ruthenian Diocese (Eparchy) of Mukacevo (Hung.: Munkács) - unformally established in the 15th century - was formally confirmed.
