Roman Catholicism was introduced on Cuba at the arrival of the Spanish in 1511 and a regular hierarchy was established soon afterwards. __________________________________________________________________________________

SAN CRISTOBAL DE LA HABANA

The Diocese of San Cristobal de la Habana was erected in 1787 as a suffragan of Santiago de Cuba. In 1925 it became a separate Archdiocese covering the western part of the island. SANTIAGO DE CUBA

The Diocese of Santiago de Cuba was erected in 1518 as a suffragan of Sevilla. It later (1546) was transferred to the jurisdiction of Santo Domingo and became an Archdiocese of its own in 1803 (covering the whole island until 1925).
