BRAZIL


Catholicism was introduced into what was to become Brazil in 1500, at the start of the Portuguese colonization. A regular hierarchy - separated of the Portuguese one - was established from 1551. In 1945 it comprised the following Archdioceses : Belém do Pará, Belo Horizonte, Cuiabá, Curitiba, Diamantina, Florianópolis, Fortaleza, Goiás, Maceió, Mariana, Olinda e Recife, Paraíba, Porto Alegre, São Luis do Maranhão, São Paulo del Brasile, São Salvador da Bahia, São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro. ____________________________________________________________________________

BELÉM DO PARÁ

The Diocese of Belém do Pará was erected in 1720 and was a suffragan of the archdiocese of São Salvador da Bahia. It became an Archdiocese in 1906.
