Roman Catholicism was introduced into Basutoland in 1832, when French
missionaries established their first mission at Roma.
The territory was first included in the Apostolic Vicariates of Natal (until
1886) and of Orange Free State (after 1886), but in 1893 it became a separate
Apostolic Prefecture.
This became an Apostolic Vicariate in 1909.
