In 1939 - after Slovakia and Subcarpathia had declared their independence - German
troops occupied what remained of Czechoslovakia.
After a brief period of German military rule, this territory was organized as the
Protektorat Böhmen-Mähren - Protektoratu Cechy a Morava (Protectorate of Bohemia-
Moravia), which became part of the German Empire, but retained - at east formally
- a certain degree of internal autonomy.
