OBERÖSTERREICH / UPPER AUSTRIA

ARCHDUCHY OF ÖSTERREICH OB DER ENNS / AUSTRIA ABOVE THE ENNS

In 1849 the western parts of the Archduchy of Austria - known since ancient times by different names (Austria Superior, Oberösterreich and Österreich ob der Enns) - were organised as a separate Kronland of the Austrian Monarchy. In 1861 it became a separate Archduchy of Österreich ob der Enns and was granted a certain degree of selfgovernment. (1) (1) This was the formal end of the long, unclear, relationship which had existed between the two parts of the original Duchy / Archduchy of Austria since the 13th century, when the territories "above the Enns" had received a separate administration, while still remaining de jure part of the original duchy / archduchy. __________________________________________________________________________________
