ARCHDUCHY OF ÖSTERREICH OB DER ENNS / AUSTRIA ABOVE THE ENNS
In 1849 the western parts of the Archduchy of Austria - known since ancient times
by different names (Austria Superior, Oberösterreich and Österreich ob der Enns)
- were organised as a separate Kronland of the Austrian Monarchy.
In 1861 it became a separate Archduchy of Österreich ob der Enns and was granted
a certain degree of selfgovernment. (1)
(1) This was the formal end of the long, unclear, relationship which had
existed between the two parts of the original Duchy / Archduchy of
Austria since the 13th century, when the territories "above the Enns"
had received a separate administration, while still remaining de jure
part of the original duchy / archduchy.

German central government. (1)
(1) The Gau also included parts of Steiermark and of the German districtsof Southern Bohemia, taken from Czechoslovakia in 1938.
(These territories had already briefly joined the land Oberösterreich
in 1918)
