This is the old lighthouse at Cape Spear. It was built by local builders
in 1836 and is Newfoundland's oldest surviving lighthouse. It is
of a common lighthouse design typical of other east coast Canadian lighthouses.
The light was imported from a lighthouse in Scotland, and in 1912 was replaced
with modern equipment. In 1955 the light was transfered to the new
concrete lighthouse. The lighthouse was much altered in the 19th
century and has been restored to it's original appearance. In 1983
Cape Spear was dedicated as a National Park by Prince Charles and Princess
Diana.
