Newfoundland is an old place by North American standards, with people fishing
off the coast of Newfoundland since the early 1500's. Settlements
were not allowed however, so Newfoundland wasn't settled until about 3
years after Williamsburg in Virginia. This picture was taken at the
Ferryland archeological site. Ferryland was settled by Lord Baltimore
in the 1620's as the Colony of Avalon, I believe. Lord Baltimore
did not arrive in the colony for several years, and when he did he was
not as happy with what he found as he might have been. The colony
was doing well for itself, but Lord Baltimore did not like the climate.
After one winter he moved the colony south to Maryland in what is now the
U.S.! I can see where he is coming from ;-). Some people stayed
however, and with the exception of one winter after the French burned Ferryland
to the ground, it has been inhabited ever since. The buildings on
top of the hill belong to the people living there. The structure
at the lower right is the unearthed site of the original blacksmith shop
of the colony.
