Orhan Pamuk is the Turkish novelist who received the 2006 Nobel Literature Prize. His novels best known in the USA are "My Name is Red" and "Snow". He broke a taboo about Turkish treatment of Armenians, was accused of "insulting Turkishness" and could have got three years in jail but the charges were dropped. He is admired worldwide for firmly believing in democratic reforms and for his excellent and sensitive and deep novels. He is firmly committed to artistic freedom and freedom of expression for all. His work has been widely translated and is read throughout the world. He has discovered new symbols for the clash and interlacing of cultures. His work explores identity and the transformations of Turkish society. His third novel "The White Castle" catapulted him into international renown and he is published in more than 40 languages. "My Name is Red" won the international IMPAC award. "The New Life" was the fastest-selling novel in Turkish history. The EU pressured Turkey into inserting free speech into its constitution.
