Shirley Franklin is the mayor of Atlanta, Georgia; the first black woman to be Mayor of a major US Southern city. She led the effort to have the papers of Dr. Martin Luther King given to Morehouse College instead of being sold at auction. She is an extremely popular Mayor who won her reelection with more than 90% of the vote. She has been featured in Business to Business magazine, the New York Times, Ebony magazine, Jet magazine, Heart & Soul magazine, Savoy magazine, Glamour, Time Magazine, Women Looking Ahead magazine, Atlanta Good Life magazine, Atlanta Woman magazine, Georgia Trend magazine and Jezebel magazine. She has made Atlanta government efficient, accoutable, open, honest and ethical. She eliminated the $82 million Atlanta deficit by cutting her staff by 50% , cutting her own salary by $40,000, cutting 277 jobs, eliminating 605 job vacancies, cutting city-owned cars and cell phones and credit cards and freezing most vacancies. She restructured and streamlined numerous city processes and upped private donations. For proving that it is possible to make big city government efficient and honest, Mayor Shirley Franklin has been named Futuresaver of the Week. Click the links below for more information.
