Ehren Watada, Lt. refused to deploy to Iraq because he knows that it is an illegal, immoral, irrational and fruitless war/occupation/bombing of combatants and civilians with most of the casualties being totally innocent civilians. He will not become a war criminal obeying orders from war criminal superiors. Expert witnesses who support him in hearings include former United Nations undersecretary Denis Halliday, international law expert Professor Francis Boyle and US Army Colonel Ann Wright, ret. who know that high level policies of the Bush administration permit, encourage and condone war crimes in Iraq. Watada announced his decision in June and has been charged with several counts of wrongdoing and could spend as much as seven years in prison. The defense succeeded in putting the Iraq war on trial for being illegal as Watada claims. The ACLU is a backer of Watada's right to free speech.
