FUTURESAVER OF THE WEEK ENDING 6-24-2006

Alfred Brownell is a lawyer and the president/founder of the Association of Environmental Lawyers of Liberia, also known as Green Advocates. Green Advocates works with Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide to help establish Liberia's first environmental laws and a new era of freedom following the criminal escapades of Liberia's prior president Charles Taylor. Green Advocates helped establish Liberia's Environmental Protection Agency to clean up the aftermath of unabated resource extraction and to establish sustainable management of natural resources. It is the beginning of the end of the culture of impunity in Africa and the beginning of African freedom for all Africans with the election of Ellen Sirleaf-Johnson as president. Brownell realizes that the actions of USA corporations in Africa and elsewhere need to be regulated to prevent their worst abuses of people and environments. He knows that consumers and governments need to ensure that what they buy is produced in non-polluting and non-corrupt ways that do not abuse human/environmental rights.
