FUTURESAVER OF THE WEEK ENDING 3-25-2006

Canan Arin is a lawyer who is a champion of women's rights and women's safety in Turkey. She co-founded Turkey's first autonomous women's group, the Purple Roof Foundation which established a women's publishing company which published Scream So Everyone Can Hear You, a collection of battered women's testimonies. Purple Roof opened the first women's shelter in Istanbul. Arin also co-founded the Istanbul Bar Association Women's Rights Enforcement Center to deal with inadequate domestic abuse case laws and enforcements. She formed the Association for Support and Training of Women Candidates to help women enter politics. In 2005 she helped shape Turkey's revised penal code to better protect abuse victims. But enforcement of women's rights still lags. Honor killing of women relatives still occurs. Arin and other activists are working hard to close loopholes and ensure enforcement. The government still fails to protect women from physical violence. Turkey has far fewer women's shelters than comparable countries. Activists have begun to offer direct education to women about their rights. For working very hard to bring about those changes Turkey needs to provide real justice to every Turkish citizen, Canan Arin has been named Futuresaver of the Week.
