Asra Nomani is a USA Muslim who is working for an expansion of Muslim women's rights. She knows it is inherently sexist to segregate men/women during prayer or other muslim religious activities and that it is unwise and unfair to favor men over women simply on the basis of one's sex. Her latest book is Standing Alone in MECCA: An American Woman's Struggle for the Soul of Islam. She is a former reporter for the Wall Street Journal and also writes articles. Her first major success was desegregating her local mosque in June 2004. Now she is pushing for a broad expansion of Muslim women's rights. She knows that Islam should be completely affirming of women's rights, tolerance and critical thinking. She and others are making slow but increasingly meaningful progress. New York City and Istanbul have had desegregated prayers. The Washington Post and Seattle Times have published essays on Islamic feminism. Islam is on its way to go back to its progressive 3rd millenium justice and equality. Nomani has 99 precepts for opening hearts, minds and doors in the Muslim world.
