FUTURESAVER OF THE WEEK ENDING 1-28-2006

Michelle Bachelet is the new President (elect) of Chile. She was jailed and tortured by Chile's fascist military junta which was supported by the USA presidency. She will make the government of Chile more fair to all of the people by improving the social security systems and educational systems. These improvements will increase the productivity of Chile's economy and the health and spirit of achievement of all of the people. She will better meet the needs of women and the poor, Chile's primary neglected groups. Despite differences she will maintain close ties with the USA. She went from being a pediatrician at a humble clinic to becoming president in 10 years of enlightened effort. The Pinochet dictatorship killed her father, imprisoned her, tortured her and forced her into exile. She dedicated her life to reversing the hatred of that misbegotten regime. She became adept at forging consensus. She worked at a clinic financed by Sweden that treated children from families that had been victims of torture and political repression. She has held government positions in health and defense. For surviving hell and moving forward to become a great woman president of Chile, Michelle Bachelet has been named Futuresaver of the Week.
